The Society of Architectural Historians Award Ceremony in St. Paul in 2018

With Kenneth Frampton

While listening to Kenneth Frampton during a roundtable discussion on architecture archives
at the 71st Society of Architectural Historians, Annual and International Conference, Minnesota, 2018.

Established at Harvard University in 1940, the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) aim to promote studies on architecture, design, landscape and urbanism through the lens of history for the benefit of scholarly communities and all. On this basis, "SAH" deals with public engagement with the history of the built environment through national, international and local programs. In 2018, this organization hosted its 71st International and Annual Conference in St. Paul, Minnesota to discuss contemporary problems, challenges, and opportunities in architecture history with 226 speakers from the world (1).

It was very informative, stimulative and perfect mix of topics. In particular, presentations and discussions on digital architectural records and archives, essential skills for architectural historians, teaching global, the audience for architectural history in the 21st century, labor issues in the academy, religion in architecture history: challenges and opportunities, and meeting minority scholars have opened up new horizons in my mind. I really enjoyed scholarly and social gatherings and architectural tours as well. At 48 sessions, speakers presented and discussed their recent academic research and studies on various topics (2). In addition, this year, the Society of Architectural Historians awarded four notable architecture historians with “the 2018 class of SAH Fellows”; Kenneth Frampton, Eve Blau, Swati Chattopadhyay, and Henry H. Keuhn (3).

One of the noteworthy things on this international conference is budgets to support to discuss architecture history through a wide participation around the world. In 2018, the 71st Society of Architectural Historians Annual and International Conference awarded 16 international speakers, 13 graduate students, 2 independent scholars with its fellowship. As one of speakers awarded by their independent scholars, I would like to express my deepest thanks to "SAH", Sandy Isenstadt, Conference Chair, SAH First Vice President, Kristin Anderson and Katherine Solomonson, Local Co-Chairs.
