Award Ceremony for Meral Iskir, FAIA at Catholic University of America

"..The gender dividend is more than diversity for diversity’s sake. It defines success not only by what is fair, but by what is effective...."

Professor Drew Faust;
"Educate Women; Change the World" (1)

Following her professional degree from Turkey, “her” story to tear down gender barriers in the US architecture merits a considerable attention in feminist studies and the profession in architecture. As far as I know, she is one of the few women architects awarded by College of Fellows, American Institute of Architects (2016) (2). Three years after this accomplishment, I think that her Joseph Miller Award by the Catholic University of America, School of Architecture and Planning on March 2019 (3) indicates not only another challenge in her inspiring career but also a special point in today’s (US) architecture profession/education: Coming from Istanbul to the US in the 1960s, today, this award to “her” by the Catholic University of America (where she obtained in her master degree) exemplifies that “a life dedicated to architecture” goes beyond all categorizations described by a gender, race, ethnicity, etc.

As a feminist scholar in architecture, I am very proud of being "the first scholar" to introduce her inspiring career story to the scholarly community. Needless to say, there is still too much to do to fill gaps in feminist architecture history for the sake of multicultural, diverse and inclusive understanding.
