My presentation and our panel at the first virtual and the 54th MESA annual meeting

I am so pleased to be a presenter at the Middle East Studies Association, "first virtual" and the 54th Annual Meeting on October 7th, 2020.

Our session was: [P5853] Countering Gender Stereotypes in the Middle East Wednesday, 10/07/20 01:30 pm

Sponsor: Association for Middle East Women's Studies (AMEWS)

Presenters:

• Contextualizing Celile Berk Butka in between Two Worlds: A Pioneering Woman Architect from Postwar Turkey to the US by Ekincioglu, Meral

• Desert Women in Samiha Khrais’s novel al-qurmiyya by Seymour-Jorn, Caroline

• The Other Women: Iran's Mighty and Marginalized by Farzaneh, Mateo Mohammad

• Embroidery & Palestine: Quiet Resistance in Women-only Spaces by Abdelnabi, Rasmieyh

• Countering Gender Stereotypes: An Ethnographic Case Study from Yemen by Adra, Najwa.

Research studies, findings and discussions by each presenters have enriched my scholarly perspective on women & gender in the rich, and diverse cultural landscape of the Middle East. It has been another inspiring scholarly experience for me to discuss “gender stereotypes” through a multidisciplinary perspective (such as anthropology, history, sociology and literature) and different geographic locations with their own specific histories, local cultures, traditions, modernization process, socio-economic conditions, etc. (such as Yemen, Iran, Palestine, and Jordan). I am thankful to Association for Middle East Women's Studies (AMEWS) for their sponsorship to our panel. With this "first virtual" MESA Annual Meeting, looking forward to comments by attendees, scholars on the Middle East and organization committee how "virtual platforms and opportunities" have affected (diverse) participation and how would it be stimulate fresh scholarly discussions on "diversity" in this region.

MESA Annual Meeting: “Since 1967, MESA has held an annual meeting in the fall where members gather to share research. MESA has been the hub for scholarly exchange from its first meeting at The University of Chicago in 1967 where a small group gathered for eight sessions to MESA's 50th anniversary meeting in Boston in 2016 where 312 sessions delighted more than 2,000 attendees. The meeting features panels and special sessions on a variety of topics related to Middle East studies. It is complemented by meetings of MESA's affiliated groups, an exciting 4-day film festival, a comprehensive book exhibit featuring the latest books and software in the field, and other informal events. The meeting provides an opportunity for friends and colleagues from a variety of disciplines to gather to share their common bond: the study of this important region of the world.”, https://mesana.org/annual-meeting, last accessed on 10.7.2020.
