SAHARA description (researched and written by Meral Ekincioglu, Ph.D.):

"The Tozzer Library is Harvard University’s leading resource for comprehensive anthropology and archaeology collections. Its original building was designed by Johnson and Hodvelt in 1974 and renovated by Kennedy & Violich Architecture, Ltd. in 2012-2014. This renovation project has achieved LEED Gold. For its façade, a custom-engineered four-side silicone-glazed window wall system, including insulating laminated glass and low-emissivity (low-e) coatings have been developed. Its interior space program includes a central light well atrium in birch wood, smart classrooms, a renewed anthropology library and faculty offices, library offices, special collections area, reading rooms, library stacks and library support services.

For sustainability goals of the renovation, the project team has utilized the Harvard University Green Building Standards. These goals include reduction of energy consumption, stormwater management, enhancement of occupant comfort by reducing solar heat gain and glare, occupant-operated windows to support natural ventilation and energy-saving ventilation system. Its twisted roof volume has been designed to capture daylight for the interior atrium and a skylight brings daylight into this interior space through the upper levels. In addition, the curtain wall and window systems’ extruded aluminum frames contain recycled content. High-performance architectural finishes also reduce maintenance needs.

Renovation team includes Lemessurier Consultants (Structural Engineer), Buro Happold Consulting Engineers, PC (MEP & Envelope) and Tillotson Design Associates (Lighting Designer).

This renovated architectural building was awarded by the Boston Society of Architects in 2016. (Honor Award for Design Excellence)."
