Architecture Group Meeting: Expanding Initiatives, Networks, and Collaborations

"..Climate change and its mounting consequences present the greatest and most urgent scientific and societal challenge of our age. Given MIT's depth and breadth of expertise, and our mission of service, I believe we have an urgent responsibility to marshal ourselves to reckon with it…” 1

Sally Kornbluth, President, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Following the momentum generated by its inaugural meeting on February 23, 2026, the Architecture Group has been advancing a new perspective within the MIT Alumni for Climate Action (MACA) community by emphasizing the multilayered relationship between architecture, urban design, and climate action. Aligned with MIT’s climate-related goals and principles, the Group is pleased to announce its upcoming April meeting and welcomes all members, scholars, and interested professionals to participate in its collective efforts to address climate emergency.

During the April meeting, the Group will review its early climate action initiatives and discuss initial concrete steps. Meral Ekincioglu, Ph.D., who has led the establishment and ongoing development of the Group’s architectural framework and activities since its inception, has maintained active communication with local and global participants, particularly those who have proposed climate action initiatives and expressed interest in further developing them. The Group’s members have been engaging with diverse geographic contexts, with attention to the differentiated impacts and challenges of climate change. This global, local and interdisciplinary engagement reflects the Group’s inclusive, action-oriented vision extending beyond the MIT campus.

The April meeting will also address strategies to further strengthen the Group’s connections and active engagement with MIT academic programs, as well as with teaching and research communities working on climate change. Since its inception, the Group has been expanding its network within the MIT School of Architecture and Planning. Positive responses to early outreach efforts have reinforced its commitment in this direction.

Opportunities for joint climate action initiatives across groups within MACA will also be explored, as the Group places strong emphasis on collaboration and on architecture’s integrative capacity in addressing climate impacts in the built environment. With this objective in mind, potential collaborations with the Climate Moonshot MACA group will be discussed.

Echoing President Sally Kornbluth’s message on climate change, the Architecture Group is acutely aware of this urgent responsibility and is mobilizing to address it.
