Architecture Group July 2026 MACA Newsletter Publication: Original Submission and Published Version

 For documentation purposes, this post includes both the original Architecture Group update submitted for the MACA July 2026 Newsletter on July 7th, 2026 and the published newsletter version. The original submission was prepared in accordance with the newsletter's stated submission guidelines (250–400 words).

For an initiative-based group, maintaining the accuracy and context of project descriptions is important not only for representing individual project leads’ contributions but also for reflecting the collective efforts, collaborations, and development process of the Group as a whole. Future editorial coordination and communication with group leaders would help ensure that published materials accurately represent the work and contributions of MACA’s interest groups.

Architecture Group’s Global Climate Action Initiatives:
Aligned with MIT’s Climate Mission (1)

The newly established Architecture Group within MACA has been advancing four climate action initiatives since its inaugural group meeting in late February 2026. Each climate action initiative is being developed through a structured framework that defines the essential problem, pilot context, methodological approach, key focus areas, impact metrics, stakeholder engagement, project phases, anticipated start and completion.

“Accelerating Passive House (PH) Adoption in Massachusetts” is guided by Mike Duclos, a former member of Governor Baker’s Commission on Clean Heat and having extensive PH implementation experience. It seeks to identify the systemic barriers that limit the implementation of PH by design architects and translating these findings into actionable strategies. The Group has reached out to Jeff Geisinger, MIT alumnus and a PH expert with a recommendation from Christoph Reinhart, MIT Architecture and Climate Professor. He provided feedback for this initiative statement and participated in the project survey. For this initiative with experts, the Group has developed collaboration with PH Massachusetts. This initiative has completed its initial phase including the design and distribution of an architect-focused survey (2). “Enhancing Climate Resilience of Critical Infrastructure in Brazil” focuses on strengthening urban resilient systems and critical infrastructure to climate-driven water extremes in the Metropolitan Region of the Paraíba Valley and North Coast (RMVale). It is currently in its data collection and assessment phase, securing access to risk maps, disaster records, and geospatial datasets. Ongoing efforts are directed toward identifying spatial patterns of climate risk and exploring resilience strategies through collaboration with experts. “Integrating Passive Design into the Policy and Framework of the Syrian Architects Syndicate for Post-Conflict Housing Reconstruction” addresses the limited integration of passive design principles into Syria's post-conflict housing reconstruction policies and professional practice. It aims to develop a context-specific Passive Design Toolkit tailored to damaged, informal, and resource-constrained housing environments. The project statement has been shared with a faculty member at MIT Architecture, and the curator of the MIT Aga Khan Documentation Center who was Research Associate at the Syrian Heritage Archive Project. He recommended an expert and expressed support for the project’s development. “Climate Intelligence in Action: A Translation Framework for the Built Environment” aims to establish operational linkages among these three initiatives by developing a cross-context translation framework that connects building performance, urban climate resilience, and decarbonization strategies across diverse geographic settings. It is also exploring opportunities to align these efforts with the objectives of the COP31 in Türkiye.
